Our Idols are...

The “Mamonas Assassinas” was a Brazilian pop/rock band. Mamonas Assassinas was a satirical Brazilian pop/rock band. They were a huge hit in 1995 among children, teenagers and even adults - probably due to the crude humor in their lyrics.

In only eight months of career they sold 2,8 million of copies of the only CD they launched. Their career ended tragically on 2nd March, 1996, when the plane in which they were crashed into the Cantareira mountain range, near São Paulo, instantly killing all the members of the band, as well as the plane crew. The accident shocked all fans. The story of Mamonas Assassinas will turn into a movie in the middle of 2007.

All of them were born in Guarulhos, except for Dinho, who is from Irecê in Bahia.
Dinho (Alecsander Alves) - vocals (born March 5, 1971)
Samuel Reoli (Samuel Reis de Oliveira) - bass (March 11, 1973)
Júlio Rasec (Júlio César Barbosa) – keyboards (January 4, 1968)
Sérgio Reoli (Sérgio Reis de Oliveira) -drums (September 30, 1969)
Bento Hinoto (Alberto Hinoto)- guitar (August 7, 1970)

A great part of the success of Mamonas is because Dinho, the funniest member. Bento a guy with rastafári hair style, was the responsible for the mix of music styles. Julio Rasec (keyboards) become famous because of his performance of Maria, in the song "Vira-Vira". The brothers Reoli, Samuel (bass) and Sérgio (drums), used the family name, Reis de Oliveira, like an artistic name.

The beginning

The Mamonas started without Dinho, in a band called Utopia, like covers of Legião Urbana e Rush. The vocalist joined them in the middle of a show, and since then, Utopia started to perform in the outskirts of São Paulo. The members soon understood that the lyrics with jokes were better than the covers. They decided to change the band, starting from the name. The demo tape that they had made, was taken to the artistic director of EMI-Odeon João Augusto Soares. João Augusto heard and contract the band in April 28, 1995, reinforcing the partnership that sold one million of copies in less than a year of career. After the disaster, the recorder launched a live disc.
