We have our Idols...

Ronaldo

I would like to talk about my Brazilian idol. Ronaldo has been the pride of our nation so
many times.

The boy was a fanatic for football and missed school many times to play with his friends.
At seventeen he started playing for “Cruzeiro” as a professional and in his first match he scored
two goals and showed his talent. In the same year he was chosen to pay for the national team in
the World Cup. Since then he has
had glorious years playing for “Barcelona” and “Milan International”, and he has also been an
ward-winning player.

After reaching a top position, Ronaldo lived the worst moments when he had a serious
knee injury during a game, which became an impairment for a long time. This dark moment only ended after a long break in 2002, when he returned to participate in the Football World Cup and our team was the winner.

Nowadays he is playing for “Real Madrid”, but he will always be one of the best.

Hortência

Born in September 23rd,1959 in Potirendaba, São Paulo,Hortência Maria de Fátima
Marcari is a former basketball player, who has been considered Brazil´s greatest female
basketball player along with Jane Arcain. She is also a member of the Women´s Basketball Hall
of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Her nickname is “The Queen”.

Hortência began to play professionally for the “São Caetano Esporte Clube” and
almost instantly became a celebrity over the country. She became an idol to many female players in the towns and cities she played at, particularly in Prudentina, where she was usually stopped by autograph seekers on her way from her house to a match.

Her first international experience was in 1976, when the Brazilian national team won
the South American Juvenile Championship in Paraguay. In 1979 she helped the team achieve
a fourth place at the Pan American Games in Puerto Rico. Hortência and the Brazilian team
improved their previous performances by winning a bronze medal in the Venezuelan Games
and a silver one in the Indianapolis Pan American, both in 1987. Four years later, Brazilians
got the gold medal in the Pan American tournament in Cuba and in 1992 a bronze medal in the
Pre-Olympic Competition in Spain and the girls got a seventh place in the Olympic Games.
They also won the Women´s World Basketball Championship in Australia in 1994 and two years
later, she retired from international competition with a silver medal in the Atlanta Olympics.
She has been working to help ordinary young people in need of an opportunity to show their skills and be far from drugs.

Popó

He is my idol. Once he was the best boxer in the world.

Arcelino Popó Freitas started boxing when he was 14 because of his older
brother Luis Cláudio, who was a boxer. He trained a lot and had 81 fights as an amateur
achieving a world record of 29 knockouts in 29 fights. At 24 he became the world champion
in his category. His first victory was really easy as he knocked out the Russian Anatoli in the
second minute.

Besides having being considered the best boxer in the world, he couldn´t get a
sponsor to pay for hotels and plane tickets as most of his fights were abroad and he decided to
be a naturalized US citizen and try to get a sponsorship. But he soon realized he was very proud of being Brazilian and gave up the idea.

After having a lot of money difficulties and sponsors´rejection , Popó decided to
quit boxing and retire. He is a very popular person and he has shown to younger athletes there
is light at the end of the tunnel.

Raulzito

Raul Santos Seixas was born in 1945 in Salvador, Bahia. When he was a child,
Raul used to read his father´s books and listen to Luiz Gonzaga and Elvis Presley. He became a
rock´n roll fan and created a band called “Os Relâmpagos do Rock”, which was later called
“Raulzito e os Panteras”.

Their first record sales were a failure and Raul revolted against CBS recorder.
While CBS president was off for some days, Raul recorded a new LP “Sociedade da Grã-Ordem
Kavernista Apresenta Sessão das 10” and ended up by being expelled from the recorder.

“Krig-Ha Bandolo” , by Phillips, was finally a success. In 1974 Raul founded the
“Sociedade Alternativa” and was arrested , tortured by DOPS (Departamento de Ordem Política
e Social ), and was exiled because of the political situation in Brazil. While he was in the USA,
his LP “Gita” was a great success and Raul won a Gold Disc Award and returned to his homeland.

With Marcelo Nova he recorded “A Panela do Diabo” and two days later
Seixas was found dead by his secretary Dalva, due to a heart attack , in August 21th,1989.
His lyrics will always be missed by many of us , the younger generations!
