My Idol

The idol that I’m going to write about is the same of too many Brazilians and many more people around the world, but he isn’t with us anymore.
He was Ayrton Senna, the most incredible athlete that Brazil had in recent history, who won the world championship of Formula 1 for 3 times.
Through history, we saw other riders that won the same or even more championships than Senna, but no one could ride, drive and win like him. He was incredible, who can’t remember the day that he started a race in the last position and finished in first place?
He’s my idol because I admire people that improve the opportunities they get and take the best place in their career.
Ayrton Senna was fantastic!

Charlie Brown Jr Band

Charlie Brown Jr is a Brazilian band of rock formed in the 90s, in the city of Santos, SãoPaulo. The Band plays hardcore with some influence of hip hop and its lyrics criticize the society from the young people´s point of view. All the members of the band were born in the city of Santos, except the singer “Chorão”, who was born in São Paulo. “Chorão” named Alexander Abrão arrived in Santos after a difficult and traumatic infancy at the age of 17 years old showing interest in practicing skate.

One day, in a local bar, the vocalist of another band had to be replaced and Chorão was invited to be the new one. When the bassist left the band, Chorão met a boy. His nickname was “Champignon”, the new bassist, a child of only 12 years old at the time. Some time later, Chorão decided to form his own band, inviting Champignon and Pelado (a drummer, his friend). Later, “Marcão” and Tiago (guitar players) formed the band for the first time. The band, still without a name, continued presenting in Santos. The inspiration for the name came when Chorão crashed his car in a tent of coconut. Its name was "Charlie Brown". The name "Jr." came soon after explaining the fact that the band is considered the “son" of a generation of musicians and bands like “Planet Hemp” (another Brazilian famous band).

Later, the musical producer Rick Bonadio invited the band to record a demo. The producer liked the song he heard and soon “Charlie Brown Jr” signed contract with “Virgin Records”. In April 2005, “Champignon”, “Marcão” and “Pelado” left the band because of "musical divergences". (we don´t know if that was the real reason). Rumor had it that “Chorão” dismissed them.

Since then, the band has new musicians: Charlie Brown Jr Heitor Vilela Gomes, Pingüim and Thiago Castanho, defining the new and current formation of the band.

Los hermanos band

Los hermanos is a rock band, their songs talk about love (not only about love) and this is the biggest characteristc of the group. All the participants were born in the state of Rio de Janeiro and their names are Marcelo Camelo who sings and plays the guitar, Bruno Medina who plays the piano, Rodrigo Amarante who also sings and play another guitar, and Rodrigo Barba the drummer.

At present it´s not my favorite music group but it is a very interesting band for people who like this kind of rock, which is calmer than the conventional rock. The lyrics are well done and if you take a minute to read or just pay more attention to the songs you can see the difference. The lyrics are also intelligent and there are no fool sentences.

It is a very hard-working band. They had their ups and downs. Their first cd is completely different from the other ones so this brought a big problem in the beginning of their career but the public already understood this change and the way they do the lyrics and the songs.

"PAPAS DA LÍNGUA" - THE BAND

The band “Papas da Língua” from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, south of Brazil was idealized in 1993 by the experienced musician, guitarist and composer Léo Henkin that joined an old known band to take the project ahead.
During this year the band has already sold thousands of records.

The last work of the band “To the Living creature” was launched in DVD and it gave a gold record to the group. The participants of the group are: Serginho Moah(vocalist), Zé Nathálio(bass), Fernando Pezão(drums), and Cau Netto(keyboards).

The last success of the band was the music “Eu sei”(“I know" in English), a song from “Páginas da Vida” (a soup opera currently broadcast on Globo - a Brazilian television). “Eu sei” is the most beautiful song in my opinion. I think that “Papas da Língua” is my favorite band at the moment.

Charlie Brown Jr. - The Band

Formation
Chorão (Alexandre Magno Abrão) - Vocals
Marcão (Marco Antônio de Brito Junior) - Guitar (left in 2005)
Tiago - Guitar (left in 2001, but returned in 2005)
Champignon (Luis Carlos Leão Duarte Junior) - Bass (left in 2005)
Pelado (Renato Perez Barrio) - Drums (left in 2005)

Santos is the homeland of every member of the band, except for Chorão, who is from São Paulo.

History
When Chorão came to Santos at seventeen (after a difficult and somewhat traumatic childhood) he already had a strong interest in skateboarding and rock music. From time to time he would stand in for a singer of a local rock band when the guy had to go to the bathroom during a show. A musician in another saw Chorão performing during these bathroom breaks and invited him to join his band.

When the bassist of that band quit, Chorão found Champignon who was twelve at the time. Later on, Chorão decided to start his own band, and invited Champignon and Pelado (Chorão's friend from another local band), and then Marcão and Tiago (a 5th member). The band would continue to have shows in the city without an official name until Chorão crashed his car in a coconut shack that was named "Charlie Brown Jr."

Producer Rick Bonadio, who Champignon knew, invited them to make a "demo" and he liked what he heard. After they had made their demo the Virgin Records signed the band.
In 1997, they released the debut album Transpiração Contínua Prolongada ("Continuous, Long Transpiration", reference to the hard work). Well-received by the public, it remains as their biggest hit, and CBJ won a VMB (the Brazilian VMA) for Breakthrough Artist.
In April of 2005, band members Champignon, Marcão, and Pelado decided to leave the band citing artistic differences. They were soon replaced by Heitor Vilela Gomes on bass, Pingüim on drums and beat box, and former band member Thiago Castanho returning to play guitar. As of 2006, the new Charlie Brown Jr. is touring throughout Brazil and toured around some cities in the United States in July.

Elis Regina

Elis Regina Carvalho Costa was born in March 17th, 1945. She was from Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul.

She was a very good singer and besides her beauty Elis had an incredible and fabulous voice that was always noticed and appreciated by everyone who heard her songs.
It was Elis Regina who helped some Brazilian composers like João Bosco, Aldir Blanc, Renato Teixeira and Fátima Guedes.

The singer was called by “pimentinha” because of her personality. She always wanted the best of her voice and the best of everyone that worked with her.

But all this success didn’t come easy. When the talented woman left her city and went to Rio de Janeiro she didn’t become famous. Her fame came when Elis decided to come to São Paulo.
And when she was 20, she won the 1st Brazilian Popular Music Festival.
In 1982 at the age of 36, Elis Regina had a heart attack caused by drinks and she died.
It was a terrible piece information for all Brazilians, who had lost a brilliant person, a fantastic singer and a tradition of Brazilian Popular Music.

Before she died, she had a beautiful daughter named Maria Rita. The little girl grew up and today she is following her mother’s path. And one thing we know is that talent in this family is genetic.

Idol

Everybody, everywhere has an idol. It doesn’t matter if the idol is a soccer player, a rock star or just your dad. Cause an idol is an idol, no matter who he is.

My idol is a different idol, cause I began to admire him after he came back to Palmeiras team.
Well, now you guys know that he is a soccer player. And his name is…Edmundo, the famous “Animal”.
But the reason why I admire him is that in the past Edmundo was a very nervous, violent and problematic player. And because of this, he had a lot of problems in his personal and professional life. Problems like fighting in a club, arguing with team players and he even caused a person’s death in a car crash.
After all this, he left soccer for a while and disappeared from the media. Some years later, he came back to play soccer again and he was different. He was another person.
That “old” Edmundo, the “Animal” was past. A new Edmundo was born. A calm person, a peaceful man, who could understand the problems and resolve them very calmly. It was exactly the opposite Edmundo.
And that’s why I admire him. Cause he learnt with the past and changed his future. And this is a life lesson. No matter how horrible your past could be. If you learn with it and change in the future, you can say that your horrible past taught something good.
Now, I think you guys know my idol and why I admire him. And the best is the life lesson that I learnt from him.

My idol is Van Gogh.

He was a famous painter and he had a difficult life.
Van Gogh tried some occupations and finally found his vocation: “painting”. Van Gogh was very alone and sick, but he was always painting. Van Gogh´s pictures weren´t sold (he sold one picture in all his life) and he didn´t have money to buy food. His brother was a person who Van Gogh liked very much and he sent money and letters to Van Gogh. One day, Van Gogh was painting in a field and felt a terrible stomachache, he didn´t have time to go to the doctor and he died. Some years later, his nephew found his paintings and opened a gallery. After that Van Gogh´s paintings became very famous.

I like Van Gogh because he was a person who never stopped doing what he liked and he was an example of living. His paintings are very nice and colourful.

RBD - The Band

RBD is a group that emerged from the soap opera "Rebelde", integrated by its protagonists: Anahí, Dulce, Maite, Alfonso, Christián and Christopher; that soon went beyond the soap opera fiction to write, in the pop music world, a reality that surpassed fiction.

RBD, a group that comes from a soap opera fiction to break down stovepipes in the musical world. Without doubt, the pop band most successful of the time and which will surely continue at the front line.

MY IDOL – By Lia

I’m going to talk about my idol: David Beckham.

He is a very good English footballer and he is handsome! David Beckham was born on May 2nd., 1975 in Leytonstone – England.

He played for Manchester United from 1991 up to 2003. In 1999, he won the Champions League. Nowadays, he plays for Real Madrid in Spain (he is the number “23”). He was captain of the English national team from November 2000 up to 2 July 2006.

Beckham has a lot of money. He is married to Victoria Adams, ex-spicy girl and they have 3 kids. Beckham is really popular, but he is especially popular among girls; they love him!

I’ve chosen Beckham as my idol, because he had a dream and he struggled for it. He is an example for me and I love his football.

My Idol

Francisco Buarque de Hollanda was born on June 19th, 1944 in Rio de Janeiro. He is the fourth of seven children of the historicist and sociologist Sérgio Buarque the Hollanda and the pianist Maria Amélia Cesário Alvim.

Since he was a child, he demonstrated his interest for music. In 1953, his family moved to Italy and he began composing his first song. In this period, the interest for soccer appeared too.
In the 50s, he used to listen to Noel Rosa, Ataulfo Alves and he preferred the foreigners Jacques Brel, Elvis Presley and the group The Platters. But it was the record “Chega de Saudade”, from João Gilberto that changed his relationship with music. His dream in this period was “to sing just like João Gilberto, make music just like Tom Jobim and write like Vinícius de Moraes.”
In 1964, he presented himself for the first time in a show. The song was “Tem mais samba” and it is considered the beginning of his career. In 1965, his first compact arrived in the stores and he began his experiences with the theater.
In 1966, the song “A banda” won the “II Festival de MPB” and was praised by the poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade.
In the 70s, he started with the fictional character “Julinho de Adelaide”, the character who dribbled the censorship for some months, in Brazil.
In the 90s, he published his first novel “Estorvo”. In 2000, he received the prize “Roma Brasília, Cidade da Paz” conceded by the mayor of Rome.

Make a Wish!

For some people, to visit Walt Disney World means to have fun in all the attractions and to take pictures with the characters. Particularly, I see more than a beautiful place, buildings to visit and an ideal place to take children. For me, that place means the power of a dream and it carries much more importance, after you get to know the journey of Walt Elias Disney.

Walt Disney was a visionary man. He built an empire only working with the fantasy of his imagination and the strength of his dreams. He became one of the most well-known motion picture producers in the world and he was nominated fro 48 Academy Awards and 7 Emmys.

The lands of Walt Disney World were bought with the money of the film “Snow White”, a large swamp was turned into 5 big theme parks, hotels, studios, water parks and there are still big areas of nature preservation too. Unfortunately, Walt Disney died a few years before the opening of the first park, the Magic Kingdom.

For those who laugh, scream and cry with the animations of Walt Disney productions, and probably feel the heart full of hope when the films end. For those who make a wish upon a star. For those people, Walt Disney left us a big legacy, full of love and joy.

CACASO - the poet

If I have an idol, it is Cacaso. Cacaso was a poet who was born in 1944. He wrote his first poems in 1962, but his first book is from 1967, which is “A Palavra Cerzida” (The Mended Word). His last book is “Mar de Mineiro” (Miner Sea), which is from 1982. Cacaso died in 1987.

Cacaso’s real name is Antonio Carlos de Brito, and he started to use the nickname to write only in his last book.

This guy is my idol because he is a kind of inspiration to write and to live. His poems are very different from the common: he uses the pontuation in a different way, and talks about strange things to say in a poem: he talk about normal situations or extraordinary situations, working with opposites. For example, read this translated poem:

"LIVING WITH"

the talk goes enthusiastic the friends
think highly of themselves they
recognize themselves the human hot in the room overflow

slowly
everybody thinks how it will be in a little time
each one’s funerals

I’ve used this poem as an example to show Cacaso’s style of writing. This poem is from his last book, which is my favorite. His first book is very different. The poems are much more lyric, and Cacaso still hasn’t his identity: his poems in that book are very close to the common way to write poetry, with a lot of lyric influence. And to read lyric poems, I prefer Vinicius de Moraes.
